Genetic heritability

“In this study of more than 2 million Swedish families, we found evidence of a substantial genetic association between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. … These results challenge nosological dichotomy between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and are consistent with a reappraisal of these disorders as distinct diagnostic entities.”

Similar/overlap

The study by Cardno et al. (2002) is recent and rigorously controlled. Results of their studies of 77 monozygotic and 89 same-sex dizygotic twin pairs indicated “significant genetic correlations” between these two diagnoses. The authors concluded that, Heritability estimates for schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and mania are substantial and similar.
